The Bible is God’s Word to us. It is the book of life that tells us how we must live our lives. That is not according to our will but to Gods will. If we don’t read and act on what the Bible says then our lives become troubled, messy and very unhappy as we stray away from Gods direction.
The Bible is like a manual that teaches us everything about life. Where do I come from? What really matters in life? How can I have a successful marriage? How can I be successful in my career? How can I live so I don’t look back in regret? How can I handle problems, bad events, difficult people and unfair situations? How can I pass that maths exam?
Well most people will say…
“Why should I read the Bible when it was written so long ago at a time when people didn’t even know that the earth was round? Do you really think that the Bible can tell me how to lead my life?
Technology may have changed but nothing else has. God has no beginning and no end. He is always unchanging and forever the same.
And Guess What!
Human nature and human desires have always been the same too. They are no different to what they were when the Bible was first written. Human nature will always be the same. We find that as we read through the Bible the issues that people faced then, relationships, societies, conflict, battles, war, famine, abuse are no different to what goes on in the world today.
What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun – Ecclesiastes 1:9
The Bible is just as relevant for us now as it was when it was written. As people continue to seek love and satisfaction in all the wrong places, God is always there to correct and guide us through His word in the Bible.
This leads to lasting peace and joy.
His revealed Word, the Bible, is so important that Jesus said of it,
“It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’- Mathew 4:4
To live life to the full, as God intended, we must listen to and take notice of God’s written Word. People have been rescued from the darkest, most hopeless situations when they have put their trust in Jesus.
People have been rescued from drug addiction, shop lifting, low self esteem, a life of violence, a life of abuse , depression, discouragement, bad choices….
….by hearing, reading and acting on Gods word.
This is because God knows what is good for us more than we do. Acting on Gods word brings His will into our lives. This saves us from being lost through acting on our own will which is not in line with the will of God.
Letting the Lord take control of your life through His word means that He is guiding and directing your steps. He will open the right doors, close the wrong doors, make a way forward for you when you don’t see a way.
This leads to inner strength, peace, victory and unshakeable joy!
When you give your life to Jesus, meditate on Gods word and live your life in line with Gods will. What is there that you need to fear? What is there that can harm you? The work of redemption by our Lord Jesus Christ brings pure lasting joy and protection from all evil.
So how do we go about reading the Bible? The whole Bible was written by God speaking His word through the prophets at different times in history. In the last and most recent period of the Bible, the new testament, God spoke to us through His Son whom He appointed heir of all things and through whom He made the universe.
The fulfillment of Gods special plan is the gospel which is the good news of Jesus Christ. The whole Bible is focused on Jesus in the new testament. The story of Jesus is repeated in the four gospels according to Mathew, Mark, Luke and John in the new testament.
Therefore the best place to start reading the Bible would be the gospels in the new testament starting with Mathew.
A story is told of a man who had never read the Bible. One day he got hold of a Bible and began to read It. Soon he exclaimed to his wife..
“If this Book is true, we are lost!”
Then he read on and not long afterward shouted joyfully to his wife..
“If this Book is true, we can be saved!”
They opened their hearts and received the Lord Jesus Christ.
Will you take that step of faith today? Just say
Lord Jesus, come into my heart and make You make Lord and Saviour, Amen.
